Abstract
Purpose. The major objectives of this study were to define and describe the areas of agreement and disagreement about the role of the vocational home economics teacher in the public schools of Arkansas, first as perceived by State Department of Education supervisors of home economics, school superintendents who supervise vocational home economics teachers, vocational home economics teacher educators, and the vocational home economics teachers themselves, and second, as perceived by vocational home economics teachers with 5 or less years teaching experience, those with 6 to 10 years teaching experience, and those with 11 or more years teaching experience. In addition, this study sought to determine opinions concerning selected issues pertaining to the position of vocational home economics teachers in Arkansas as perceived by state supervisors, school superintendents, teacher educators, and home economics teachers themselves. Procedure. Data were received from 454 respondents from the sample of 566 subjects which represented an 80 percent return of the opinionnaire mailed. The closed-form opinionnaire was divided into three sections: (I) biographical and professional information, (II) role inventory consisting of eight competency categories (seven questions per category), and (III) current issues. Descriptive statistics were used to obtain a profile of the vocational home economics teacher in Arkansas. Analysis of variance with the Scheffe test was used to test research questions stemming from objectives one and two. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to test research questions relating to objectives two and three. The level of acceptance of equal perceptions among subgroups was .05..
