Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if selected characteristics of registered nurses who were members of a union differ from those of registered nurses who were not members of a union. The overall score of job satisfaction, economic component score, and noneconomic component score was examined from the perspective of union-nonunion status and intent to vote status. Unionized and nonunionized nurses were examined to determine if they differ in the job satisfaction components identified as being important. Demographic variables were examined in relation to intent to vote and union-nonunion status. A sample of unionized (New York State Nurses Association) and nonunionized (Texas Nurses Association) nurses were surveyed to determine their overall, economic, and noneconomic scores of job satisfaction, demographic characteristics, and intent to vote. Results. Results revealed that unionized and nonunionized nurses differed in their overall score, economic component score, and noneconomic component score of job satisfaction and intent to vote status. There was no difference in the job satisfaction components the unionized and nonunionized registered nurses identified as being important. Conclusions. (1) Nonunionized registered nurses with an intent to vote "No Union" are more satisfied on the three components of job satisfaction than nonunionized registerd nurses with an intent to vote "For the Union." (2) Unionized and nonunionized registered nurses with an intent to vote "For the Union" have similar levels of job satisfaction. (3) Job satisfaction is not a factor in the unionized registered nurses intent to vote "For the Union" or "No Union." (4) Nonunionized registered nurses with an intent to vote "No Union" are more satisfied on the overall and economic components than unionized registered nurses with an intent to vote "No Union." Nonunionized and unionized registered nurses with an intent to vote "No Union" have similar levels of job satisfaction on the noneconomic component. (5) Job satisfaction components judged to be most important are the same for unionized and nonunionized registered nurses. (6) Nonunionized registered nurses 46 years of age or older are more likely to vote "No Union."
