Traffic accidents and the deaths and serious injuries they produce have developed into a major problem plaguing our society. Various activities, both engineering and educational, have attempted to reduce the overall number of accidents. Many of these accident countermeasures have experienced some degree of success. However, the number of highway deaths and injuries is still quite large and serious. The potential of seat belts to reduce deaths and injury in an automobile crash has been well established. Since how to motivate people to use their seat belts is a major concern of traffic safety professionals, this study deals with one approach of "convincing" people of the value of seat belts and thus motivating them to use their seat belts. The major objectives of this investigation were as follows: 1. To determine whether seat belt convincer riders are motivated to wear their seat belt more often. 2. To determine whether seat belt convincer riders are motivated to use their seat belts more often during certain types of trips. 3. To determine whether seat belt convincer riders experience an attitude change toward seat belts in general.en
