dc.description.abstract | The chemoreceptors for the reception of the sex pheromone in the female Galleria mellonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were studied electrophysiologically and morphologically to determine the nature of the sex pheromone odor receptors and to evaluate 2 current olfactory theories. The morphology of the antennal sensilla were examined with scanning electron microscopy, phase contrast microscopy, and histological sections of the female Galleria antenna. Five major types of sensilla were observed on the ventral surface of the flagellum: coeloconica, basiconica, chaetica, trichodea, and sword-shaped sensilla. The trichodea, because of its maximum density and morphology, may contain the olfactory receptor cells involved in sex-pheromone reception. ... | en |
