An intelligent data communication multiplexer has been designed and constructed for use with Agency Records Control's minicomputer system. The multiplexer is designed to utilize a Signetics 2650 microprocessor as the main component of the multiplexer. A set of functional characteristics is developed for the multiplexer. The multiplexer will support up to four terminals. Data is transmitted in blocks for each port and includes an error detection and retransmission capability. Each block of data is fully buffered to allow the baud rates of the communication line between two multiplexers to be less than between each multiplexer and its local ports. Data is compressed before transmission if possible. The development of the hardware components is presented which includes all major steps from the initial design through final testing. The operating characteristics of the multiplexer are specified in the firmware that drives the microprocessor. The process of organizing, writing, and testing the firmware is presented in detail. Further extensions and enhancements are discussed which would increase the usefulness of the multiplexer.en
