Several different techniques have been developed recently for estimating the transition rate coefficients in a stochastic compartmental model. Stochasticity has been present in these models in the transitions or in the rate coefficients. Existing estimation techniques are compared and recommendations are made concerning the best techniques for both models. A more realistic model is suggested which has stochastic transitions and random rate coefficients. Monte Carlo simulation techniques are used to compare these estimation procedures for this model. Extensions of existing techniques are suggested in the hope of improving existing procedures.en
