Abstract
Purpose [line break] The purpose was to evaluate the suitability of single topic student materials and state adopted textbooks for group instructional purposes and state adopted textbooks for individual instructional purposes. The following objectives guided the research: 1. Determine the suitability of state adopted textbooks and single topic student materials for group instructional purposes as rated by vocational agriculture teachers. 2. Determine the suitability of single topic student materials for general instructional purposes and state adopted textbooks for individual instructional purposes. 3. Determine the suitability of using single topic student materials as the only source of such materials for group instructional purposes. 4. Determine if the vocational agriculture teachers' ratings of the suitability of state adopted textbooks and single topic student materials for group instructional purposes are associated with selected demographic factors. 5. Determine if ratings of the suitability of using single topic student materials for general instructional purposes and as the only source for group instructional purposes and state adopted textbooks for individual instructional purposes are associated with selected demographic factors. Demographic factors used were vocational agriculture supervisory area, years of teaching experience, number of teachers within departments, type of college degree held, and average number of students per teacher. Five null hypotheses were developed from a theoretical base to achieve the latter two objectives. [Line break] Procedure [line break] Opinionnaires were returned by 400 Texas vocational agriculture teachers for a 96 percent return. Data pertaining to the first three objectives were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Analysis of variance, with both the Scheff test and the Duncan test, was used to test null hypotheses. The .05 level of significance was set. ...
