dc.description.abstractThe in vitro pathogenesis of equine infectious anemia (EIA) is described. Light and electron microscopic comparisons of the pathogenesis of both cell adapted (EMS) and Wyoming strain (WS) of EIA virus in equine dermal cell line (CCL-57) and primary horse leukocyte cultures (PHL) were conducted. The EMS virus was cytolytic in both cell systems, while the WS virus was cytolytic in PHL but transformed CCL-57 cells as evidenced by the detection of early proteins in cell membranes. Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses were also investigated but were not involved in the in vitro pathogenesis of EIA virus.en
