Abstract
The purpose of this study was to (1) identify those teaching skills which are essential for subject-matter specialists to perform within each of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service's four major program areas, that is, agriculture, home economics, 4-H and youth, and community resource development; (2) ascertain the best time for training in the performance of these teaching skills; and (3) assess the present training needs relative to these skills. During the conduct of the study it was decided to treat the 1890 Extension program, headquartered at Prairie View A&M University, as a fifth program area. This was necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the study as they relate to this group of specialists, since tis group performs within the four major program areas but is administratively organized as a single, separate unit. The strategy of descriptive research, employing a two-questionnaire mail survey, was used. In the development of the first questionnaire a jury of experts composed of Extension program leaders of the program areas elected for the study assisted in the compilation and validation of a comprehensive list of 123 teaching skills. The first questionnaire addressed the first two objectives of the study and provided data to construct the second questionnaire. The second questionnaire addressed the last objective. Each program area responded to a different questionnaire, that is, the skills were different, not how they were judged or stated..
