dc.description.abstract | Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine and describe basic representative exercises performed with light apparatus in the United States from 1860 to 1920. Light apparatus studied within the limitations of this investigation were: wands, dumbbells, Indian clubs, barbells, hoops, and rings. Summary: The procedures used in conducting the research for this study were those of the historical method. Letters were sent to directors of physical education in all major cities in the Midwest and East requesting information on books, manuals, or articles dealing with physical education activities in their city during the designated time period. The letter also asked for names of individuals who might have worked in these programs in the early decades of the 1900's. Similar letters were sent to colleges known to have had physical education programs prior to 1900. The third avenue of correspondence was with specific individuals known for their interest in historical research in physical education. ... | en |
