Abstract
Questionnaires were mailed to owners of dwellings around Lake Whitney, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir in central Texas, to determine the significance of recreation as a factor in the development of home sites around a Corps of Engineers lake. A comparison was drawn between resident and non-resident homeowners to see if a significant difference existed between the two subpopulations in their characteristics, values and attitudes concerning their lakeside home. Questionnaires were sent to approximately 50 percent of the homeowners around Lake Whitney. A return of 59 percent of usable responses was received. Dwellings of the homeowners surveyed tended to be conventional houses, cottages modified for permanent living and a large number of mobile homes. Dwellings occupied lots less than a quarter acre in size; further, more than half of the respondents had a lake view of the lake from their property.
