Abstract
The design process for roadway lighting involves very complex interrelationships among the requirements for a suitable visual environment, warranting conditions for lighting, guidelines for lighting design, and cost-effective priorities for fund expenditures. This dissertation concerns a design procedure for roadway lighting incorporating these interrelationships. Specifically, a procedure is developed based on information needs of night drivers as related to the interrelationships. A basic framework, consisting of information needs produced by various traffic facility characteristics, is established for development of the design procedure. A diagnostic study team of lay drivers and professionals in lighting was used to identify the information needs produced by characteristics of selected traffic facilities. ...
