Abstract
This dissertation is an empirical test of a theory of spatial pricing policy. The theory to be examined is one developed by Professor M. L. Greenhut in A Theory of the Firm in Economic Space. It is a theory of the firm which differs from most microeconomic theories. This spatial theory is based on a recognition of the existence of costly economic space between buyers and sellers. One of the logical implications of this spatial theory is the profit maximizing spatial price structure of the oligopolistic firm. This price structure is one of partial freight absorption or, alternatively stated, price discrimination in favor of more distant buyers. The objectives of this research are 1) to investigate the spatial price structure of large U. S. firms and 2) to analyze the relevance of this theory to our spatial economy. ...
