Abstract
Purposes of Study [line break] The purposes of this study were: (1) to determine how much power or influence students feel they should have in determining selected administrative policies in college governance and academic administration; (2) to determine how much power or influence students feel they actually possess in determining selected administrative policies in college governance and academic administration; and (3) to determine the relationship between selected demographic characteristics of the students comprising the study sample and the degree of power or influence they feel they should have and feel that they possess in determining selected administrative policies in college governance and academic administration. [line break] Research Procedures [line break] The sample population consisted of 270 Negro students, academically classified as juniors in attendance at three separate church-related, predominantly Negro, coeducational colleges located in East Texas, with a total enrollment of approximately 1,600 students, and with a total junior class of approximately 300 students. The instrument employed was a questionnaire consisting of 62 items. Instrument development was facilitated by preliminary pretest data collection at a fourth church-related predominantly Negro coeducational college. Statistical techniques used included (1) frequency tabulations and distributions; (2) measures of central tendency; (3) analysis of variance and correlated t tests; and (4) determination of levels of significance. [line break] Findings for Selected Demographic Characteristics [line break] The population sample divided by age into 3 percent 19 years, 33 percent 20 years, 56 percent 21-23 years, and 8 percent 24 years and over. Single participants represented 80 percent of the sample, 20 percent were married, and none were separated or divorced. The sex distribution was 43 percent male and 57 percent female. The median and mean grade-point averages were 1.75 and 1.81 respectively on a 3 point scale. ...
