dc.description.abstract | Pour desmid species were grown as clones in soil-water or a modification of Waris medium. In the modified Waris medium, the concentrations of the elements Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, and the pH were varied individually. All other chemical constituents were held constant. The effects of chemical variations of the medium produced significant differences between test means at the 5% significance level. Most size differences of the means were sufficiently small to be of limited taxonomic value. Changes in the cellular morphology of each species were discussed with respect to taxonomic implications. Suggestions for synonymy were given if cellular variations occurred that resembled subtaxa of the species of allied species | en |
