dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this investigation was to study the three components of the thermomagnetic force. Since the thermal force study was necessary in order to better understand the behavior of the thermomagnetic force, measurements of the thermal force were done first, then, the measurements of the three components of the thermomagnetic force were made. The thermal force was measured in the paramagnetic gases NO and 0 [subscript 2] over a broad range of mean free paths covering the thermal force maximum. The study was done on an aluminum foil disk, and a paper disk suspended between two parallel plates. The disks were oriented" with their surfaces perpendicular to the heat flux. Measurements showed that the behavior of the thermal force near the observed maximum was explained in terms of the theory of Einstein and of the recent theories of Waldmann and Vestner, which characterize the thermal force as being proportional to the translational heat flux. | en |
