The purpose of this study is to examine some of the problems of translating contemporary Spanish-language fiction into English. This inquiry has analyzed practices of various translators of the fiction of the Argentine author Julio Cortazar. The corpus of the study has included selections of fiction (three short stories and two novels) by Cortazar and their English translations. The translators are Claribel Alegria, Paul Blackburn, Darwin J. Flakoll, Jean Franco, Elaine Kerrigan, and Gregory Rabassa. The method of the study involved comparison of the translations with the originals and also with other translations. Analysis of the comparisons yielded the categories identified below. The analysis was based upon the entire corpus: the findings of this study are illustrated by 262 quotations from Cortazar and his translators. ...en
