A generalized model for storage and retrieval has been designed-developed, and implemented. It has been adapted to a crystallographic chemical data base. The thesis is that it is possible to design general systems in a modular fashion such that particular modules can be tailored to meet peculiar input/output requirements in certain applications. The system developed as a result of this project can be classified as "general" since it possesses a certain degree of hardware-independence, data-independence, and applications-independence. The system might also be characterized as "pseudo-general" since certain modules, input/output related, that make up the system have to be tailored to fit a particular application's requirements. The major portion of the system remains independent of the input data and output requirements. The system incorporates several features that make it suitable for use in a variety of applications. It permits four methods of retrieval which include facilities for accession number, browsing, and keyword retrievals. It also has a screen searching retrieval capability. The system makes use of primary qualifiers, secondary qualifiers, and screens, depending on the manner in which the keys to be used by the system are initialized. It is possible to request very specific or very broad queries.en
