Accurate measurement of highway skid resistance in terms of skid numbers determined in accordance with ASTM method D 274-70 has required the application of appropriate reference standards for the calibration of locked wheel skid trailers used as test equipment. This investigation was concerned with development of criteria needed for the design and construction of primary and secondary standard reference pavement surfaces for the dynamic calibration of the entire test equipment assembly. Analysis of the results of skid trailer cross-correlation studies and consideration of the range of expected highway skid numbers indicated that five standard reference pavement surfaces would be required to reduce the probable error of measurement to an acceptable value. ...en
