dc.description.abstractThe inquiry of critics into Drayton's Idea sonnet sequence has largely been confined to three areas -- the sonnets' originality, their autobiographical content, and their evaluation--but many readers have been struck by the sonnets' high drama. The purpose of this study is to analyze the sixty-three sonnets of Idea to characterize the devices that give them dramatic force, and thus to determine, by comparing Drayton's practice in sonnet writing to that of his contemporaries, whether Drayton made a unique contribution to the sonnet form. ...en
