Computer studies were made of high energy proton and deuteron beams which indicated that protons to 80 MeV and deuterons to 70 MeV could be achieved if the radio frequency range were extended to 18.75 MHz and additional flutter were available. It was determined that the needed flutter could be obtained, essentially, by rewiring the valley coils to act as flutter coils. Studies were made on a quarter-scale model of the radio frequency system where it was found that, by adding a radio frequency driver and slightly modifying the resonator tank panels, the frequency could be extended even beyond the needed 18.75 MHz. The studies showed that the deuteron energy was limited at 70 MeV by the maximum main magnet coil current and that the proton energy was limited at 80MeV by the amount of flutter which could be obtained without overheating the flutter coils.en
