Abstract
The result of a measurement and a theoretical calculation of the effect of the geomagnetic field on the charge ratio as a function of energy and zenith angle in the geomagnetic west are presented and compared. The theoretical calculations are unique in that they consider the dipole nature of the geomagnetic field and the distributed sources of muons. The experimental results are unique because this is the first work to be reported which uses three wide-gap spark chambers with high spatial resolution in conjunction with two separate magnets. These features allow the complete identification of about 99% of the events. A quantitative comparison of the experiment and the theoretical calculation shows excellent agreement
