Abstract
Four cotton strains (Gossypium hirsutum L.), their reciprocal F₁, F₂ and backcross hybrids supplied the seedcotton for estimations of lint percentage and separation into five different components as follows: (1 ) embryos and (2 ) seedcoats separated from seeds left overnight in a germinator and expressed as weight per 100 or indexes; (3) lint density, or weight of lint per unit surface area; (4 ) fuzz density, or weight of fuzz per unit surface area obtained by weighing oven dried seed before and after acid deliniting; (5) seed density as the ratio of weight to volume of seed. Seedcotton from crosses made in all possible combinations among the four strains was similarly separated into F₁ embryo indexes and the four other components considered as maternal tissue. The interrelationships among these components and their influence on lint percentage, lint index and germination were studied with correlation and regression techniques, supplemented by inheritance studies. ...
