Abstract
Ion pairing affects the E.S.R. spectra of cyclooctatetraene (COT) anion radical, influencing the rates and thermodynamic parameters of the line-broadening process and the disproportionation equilibrium, which controls the spin concentration. We have shown that for certain conditions the major source of line-broadening is the electron transfer from the dianion to the anion radical. Other contributions to ion pairing phenomena, and exchange with the solvated electron in liquid ammonia are minor. No evidence for ion pairing for anion radicals other than COT could be found in liquid ammonia. The anion radicals of several substituted benzylidene malonitriles were prepared. These anion radicals were found to undergo dimerization and polymerization except where the group substituted into the alpha position is large enough to prevent these reactions by steric hindrance.
