Abstract
Statement of the Problem [line break] The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an experimental study aid on university students' achievement in plan trigonometry. [line break] Description of Procedures [line break] For this study conducted over the two semesters of the academic year 1968-69, it was decided that the control group and experimental group would be those students in the fall and spring semesters, respectively, who enrolled for plane trigonometry and who were present at the times for pre-testing and post-testing with forms of the ETS Cooperative Test Division Trigonometry tests. The pre-tests were given the second week of each semester; post-tests were given four weeks from the end of each semester. In order to be included as a subject, each student had to have scores on the CEEB's Mathematics Achievement Test (Level I) and the CEEB's Scholastic Aptitude Test, Mathematical on file. Texas A&M University's Counseling and Testing Center supplied these scores for the study. These scores and the ETS Test scores from the pre-tests were used as covariates to adjust for student knowledge and ability. The number of subjects that met the above qualifications and that could be included in the study was 537. Analyses of the two sets of CEEB scores indicated comparability of the two groups. An analysis of the ETS Test scores from the pre-tests indicated that these scores had to be used as covariates to adjust for student quality between the two groups. ...
