Potassium-calcium exchange equilibria were measured in soils by the technique of Beckett. Mineralogical analyses were based on separate quantitative cation exchange and selective dissolution techniques in conjunction with x-ray diffraction and chemical methods. Clay minerals in both the coarse and fine clay fractions are mixtures of montmorillonite, mica, vermiculite and chlorite with minor amounts of kaolinite. Total elemental analysis data of the <0.2 [micro] fractions indicated the presence of an iron-rich clay intermediate between beidellite and nontronite in average composition. ...en
