Abstract
The purpose of this research was to determine if a sixty-minute placement test could be developed which would aid in the placement of College Algebra students at Tarleton State University. It was also the purpose of this study to determine the best single predictor, or set of predictors, of success in Tarleton's College Algebra Course (1043). A placement test consisting of fifty-six multiple choice questions was developed. After an item analysis the test was revised, and the new form of the test, consisting of fifty multiple choice questions, was then administered. In addition to the placement test the following variables were considered: (1) High School Algebra I grades, (2) SAT Combined scores, (3) SAT Verbal scores, and (4) SAT Math scores. The hypotheses of this research were: (1) A sixty-minute placement test can be developed such that its results indicate that a student who makes a grade greater than or equal to a determined raw score can successfully complete Tarleton State University's College Algebra Course. (2) The placement test, together with one or more additional variables will correlate significantly with a student's 1043 College Algebra grade at Tarleton State University. ...
