Abstract
Analysis of data collected and analyzed from research leading to this dissertation proved that six leaf-development mutants (crinkled-dwarf, rugose, strap leaf, Heritable Abnormality-3, Heritable Abnormality-1 and veins-fused) are located at three distinct loci on chromosome 15 of Gossypium hirsutum L. Four additional leaf development mutants (Lubbock-1, Georgia-1, -2 and -3), collected by workers at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, College Station, Texas, were shown to reside at two of these loci and two mutants (Arkansas -1 and - 2) were not allelic to any of the mutants at the three loci. Crinkled-dwarf is the only mutant allele which resides at the crinkled-leaf locus; rugose, Lubbock-1, strap leaf and Heritable Abnormality-3 are alleles at a second locus (strap leaf locus); veins-fused, Georgia-1, -2 and -3, and Heritable Abnormality -1 are alleles at a third locus (veins-fused locus). However, Georgia-1, -2 and -3 were determined to be the same allele as veins-fused. The two latter allelic series are new additions to the present chromosome map of G. hrisutum. Therefore, gene symbols were assigned to each member of these series. Rugose, Lubbock-1, strap leaf and Heritable Abnormality-3 were designated as strap leaf-1 (s¹s¹), leaf-2 (s²s ²), strap leaf-3 (s³s³) and Strap Leaf-4 (S⁴S⁴), respectively. The second allelic series, comprised of veins-fused and Heritable Abnormality-1, were designated as veins-fused-1 (vf¹vf¹) and Veins-fused-2 (Vf²Vf²). ...
