Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the actual cost of community education in the State of Texas during the 1977-78 academic year. This information could be used as a data base to assist public school administrators, who wish to implement and maintain community education in calculating the cost of such a program to their individual districts. In order to accomplish this purpose, answers to the following questions were sought: 1. To determine the cost of operating a community education program by class and by student. 2. To determine the energy costs of maintaining a community education program. 3. To determine the custodial costs for maintaining a community education program. 4. To determine the staffing costs for maintaining a community education project. 5. To determine the proportional costs of community education within the school's general operating budget. Input for the survey instrument used in data collection was provided by an advisory group consisting of selected members from the Texas Education Agency, Center for Community Education, Texas A&M University and functioning community education projects. This expert input generated the development of six survey instruments designed to seek specific information about community education in the State of Texas. The total sample for this study utilized fifty-seven public school districts identified by Texas Education Agency as having successful community education projects in the State of Texas. After all instruments were mailed to community education personnel and returned to the Center for Community Education, Texas A&M University, the researcher analyzed the data, documented those questions and answers that specifically pertained to the cost of community education. A follow-up telephone interview was made to validate received data and acquire missing data. ...
