dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Adult Learning Center approach in teaching adults language-arts skills, as compared to the traditional classroom method. The investigator assessed the effect of each method on Level II (grade equivalents 4-6) student achievement in the areas of reading (reading comprehension, reading vocabulary, total reading) and language (mechanics of English, spelling, total language). Also, age, formal school grade-level completed, and grade-level placement were investigated. Two separate studies were conducted. One involved 14 Mexican-Americans in San Antonia, Texas. The other consisted of 62 male felons at the Huntsville prison unit of the Texas System of Corrections. The Tests of Adult Basic Education, Level M, Form 1, provided pretest scores.
