dc.description.abstract | The use of a fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FFPI) as an optical current transducer is demonstrated, and an optical detection technique which is appropriate for high sensitivity measurement and for a multiplexed sensor system is developed. A conventional current transducer produces a voltage waveform in proportional to the amplitude of alternating current in a conducting line. An FFPI converts this time-varying voltage to an optical signal. The digital signal processor incorporates a linearly chirped semiconductor laser as the light source. A prototype of the proposed optical CT is implemented and the response to 60 Hz ac over the design range from 0-1300 A rms is characterized. The noise level and the transient response of the transducer is measured and analyzed. It is concluded that this system has several advantages over other CTs including electrical isolation, fast response, low cost, and compactness. | en |
