Abstract
Stopping, powers Tor 20-1 50 keV hydrogen and helium ions in carbon (graphite), silicon, and gold were determined using thick target backscattering in an effort to assess the applicability and/or limitations of the technique for performing absolute stopping power measurements in the intermediate and low energy regions. Present calculations (which have an estimated probable error of less than 5%) are in good agreement with other measurements performed on "bulk" type targets, but are significantly higher than those reported from thin film measurements. Due to the scarcity of stopping power data in the low and intermediate energy regions for "bulk" targets, much more experimental work is required before definite conclusions can be reached concerning the discrepencies in the measured stopping powers.
