Fluid Flow Visualization Of A Multiple Disk Centrifugal Pump Blood Flow Device
Abstract
An attempt was made to visualize the flow in a multiple disk centrifugal pump blood flow device. The purpose of the fluid flow visualization study was to determine if regions of high shear stress or stagnant flow existed within the pump. These flow characteristics limit the effectiveness of a blood flow device to be used for long term circulatory support.
Fluorescent tracer particles were introduced into a mock circulatory loop. The particles were illuminated by an AC powered UV lamp and pictures were taken with a 35mm camera and 400 speed film. The pictures were not useful for flow analysis despite success with a similar fluid flow visualization experiment used to study pipe flow.
