This two phase thesis examines the issue of social planning in new town developments. The first phase consists of a historical survey of utopian efforts dating from the Industrial Revolution which have exhibited a great deal of concern for the social aspects of planning. It also explores the relationship between the ideal physical organization of the developments and their consequential social organizations. The second phase of the survey regards modern American new town developments in light of the strong utopian social tradition, and discusses the current directions that modern social planning is taking, especially with concern toward the ever-present reality of increasing urban and social problems.en
