Abstract
In this paper the thermodynamic viability of heat pumps is evaluated by potential work flux (exergy) analysis. A short description of the exergy (work potential) and other concepts such as 'lost work' needed for exergy analysis are given at the beginning of the paper. Also introduced in this paper is a new term which indicates the usefulness level of energy or exergy for a given purpose.
These concepts are utilized to evaluate thermodynamic viability of thermocompressors and mechanical compressors (heat pumps) with actual applications in Monsanto. Guidelines for possible application areas are drawn from the analysis, and conclusions are drawn both about the usefulness of exergy analysis and about the heat pump application areas.
