Abstract
Gas Research Institute initiated a program in 1985 to develop cost-effective gas engine-driven cooling systems for commercial and industrial applications. Tecogen, Inc., has designed, fabricated, and tested a nominal 150-ton engine-driven water chiller. The system employs a 454 cubic inch Chevrolet engine, modified for natural gas, a Howden screw compressor, and micro-processor controls. The unit has achieved a COP of 1.4 at 142 tons (ARI full load conditions). The market for engine chillers in industrial applications is large. Approximately 3,400 water chillers were sold in 1984, of which an estimated 25% were placed in processes.
