dc.description.abstractThe US Department of Energy’s Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) is partnering with industry to drive a 25% reduction in industrial energy intensity by 2017—and also contribute to an 18% reduction in carbon intensity economy-wide by 2012. To expedite progress in achieving these targets, ITP and industry are collaborating with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), non-profits, USEPA and NIST to facilitate the development of a certification for manufacturing plants. A key element in this certification program is the ANSI/MSE 2000:2008 national standard for energy management. Currently being revised in 2008, this standard promotes a continual improvement model which leads to sustained energy savings as well as further energy reductions. The paper will describe the model, the revision process and the contributions of national energy stakeholders to the changes in the standard. In addition, a national pilot program that tests the adoption of the standard in industrial facilities will be presented. Finally, international interest in energy management is driving the development of an ISO management standard. The U.S. DOE is leading this effort in partnership with other countries and expects ANSI/MSE 2000:2008 to be a foundational document for a new international energy management standard.en
