The Exhibition of the Senses is a project to analyze the ability of architecture to rely on the senses outside of vision for cues, specifically architecture for those with disabilities. This project is specific to the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin, TX, which comes with its own quirks in contemporary design. The experience starts in a lobby with connected exhibitions designed to introduce the art of the school to the public that would visit. The space also functions as an education space during the week with the rest of the school. The exhibition spaces are connected by ramps that allow those who are wheelchair bound to easily access all parts of the project. Within each space, touch, smell, sound, and even light contrast are used to delineate the spaces. This allows anyone to experience the space to the fullest with any amount of ability. The project uses this ramp form to create a courtyard to facilitate passive outdoor cooling using the prevailing winds. This makes the courtyard a preferred space on campus. The project merges accessible architecture with contemporary design.
