A Single-Case Experimental Design and a Systematic Literature Review on Portable Technology and Employment-Social Skills to Support Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
Abstract
Benefits of having access to a career or job can be belonging to a community and increased levels of independence. Poor social skills of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be attributed to the underrepresentation of people with IDD in the workforce. My two dissertation studies focus on reviewing and evaluating single-case experimental design (SCED) studies which have used portable electronic assistive technology (PEAT) for promoting employment related social behaviors (ERSB) in people with IDD. The first study was a systematic literature review which reviewed SCED studies and evaluated the different types of PEAT used. Additionally, What Works Clearinghouse Standards (4.1) were applied to the studies included in the review to assess their rigor. The second study used a multiple baseline across participants design to evaluate the effect of video-based instruction via PEAT for increasing students’ ERSB in competitive integrated employment (CIE). Further, the SCED included a packaged intervention which used video-based instruction via the students’ own smartphones and also a self-monitoring component. Lastly, the SCED included a normative comparison to objectively establish a metric for success when comparing students’ ERSB to their coworkers. Collectively, these two studies provide researchers, practitioners, and people with disabilities with different PEAT which can be used in CIE settings for supporting ERSB. PEAT can also be a path to providing instruction in a more normalized manner and reduce the number of people supporting people with disabilities in CIE which can be stigmatizing and also reduce opportunities for social interactions.
