The National Football League’s Star Performers: An Exploration of National Football League Veterans, Team Captains, and Pro Bowl Players’ Emotional Competence
Abstract
This study identified which emotional intelligence competencies were essential to the National Football League Veterans, Team Captains, and Pro Bowl players’ work performance, to better assess NFL draft prospects prior to entering the NFL. The study further determined the insights of National Football League Veterans, Team Captains, and Pro Bowl players regarding the most important competencies of the Emotional Competence Framework: Self-Awareness, Self-Regulation, Motivation, Empathy, and Social Skills. Prior to contacting the former NFL players, a pilot study was conducted with a former NFL player and a former Canadian Football League player. These interviews helped aid in the final questions used to interview the former NFL veterans, team captains, and pro-bowl players. The participants were sent an email asking for their participation in the study and then contacted via a phone call to set up the interview. The interviews were conducted in the months of March and April via telephone and Zoom. This study found that NFL star performers had displayed strengths in at least six competencies across all five areas of emotional intelligence. Significant data showed that Achievement drive, Optimism, and Leadership competencies were most instrumental in the National Football League Veterans, Team Captains, and Pro Bowl players’ work performance and success. These emotional competencies significantly aided in their job performance and can help to better assess NFL draft prospects prior to entering the NFL draft. It is recommended that the NFL implement emotional intelligence assessments to NFL draft prospects during the evaluation period prior to the NFL draft.
