Digital documentation of mid-century modern architecture: Terrestrial laser scanning of the Teague Research Center. Poster presented at the 2019 20th Annual Historic Preservation Symposium at Texas A&M University
Description
Digital documentation of the Olin E. Teague Research Center began in the fall of 2017. This documentation captured ground-based, exterior laser scans of the building. While registration is typically done with the assistance of targets (checkerboards or spheres) and total data stations, this project relied on the software’s (FARO Scene) ability to recognize surface planes and use those for registration. In the context of contemporary (or, in this case, mid-century modern) architecture, it is possible to achieve comparable results to registration aided by digital survey markers and measurements. In the fall of 2018, documentation of the Teague Research Center continued with additional financial support from the San Antonio Conservation Society and Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association. This next phase of laser scanning addressed the roof of Teague as well as the main circulation areas of the interior. These interior areas included the corridors on levels 1-3, the east stairwell, the middle stairwells, and the upper portion of the west stairwell. Roughly 30 scans were registered together between the 2017, ground-based positions and the roof positions; and just over 70 interior scan positions were registered. While the exterior and interior have been registered within themselves, the exterior and interiors scan projects need to be registered together as a whole. Additionally, current registration outputs lack the level of adherence we typically aim for and achieve. So, registration within the exterior and interior scan projects needs to be refined before combining the projects. Once combined, we would like to complete the remaining primary circulation spaces of the interior: the corridors of the ground and basement levels and the lower portion of the west stairwell.Department
