CS26: Online Mitigation of Gearbox Bearing High Temperature due to Oil Varnishing
Abstract
ThiscasestudypresentsanincidentofsuddentemperatureincreaseofabearinginaspecialpurposegearboxduringnormaloperationDetailsofthedirectcauseinvestigation,onlinemitigationandlongertermimprovementswillbesharedThecompressortrain(motor,gearboxandcompressor)operatesunderhigherthanusualoiltemperaturebecauseoftheundersizedcoolingsystemOvertheyears,oilvarnishingwasdetectedbutdidnotcausemajorissuestothemachinesduringoperationIn2018,asuddenincreaseinbearingtemperatureofonebearinginthegearboxwasdetectedTheincreasewasgradualoverseveralweeksfrom~80DegCto105DegCTherewasacorrespondingdecreaseinvibrationatthesamebearingInvestigationconcludedthatthelikelycausewasvarnishdepositedonthebearingpads,causingtheclearancetoreducewhichledtoanincreaseintemperatureandreductioninvibrationAnonlinede-varnisherwasinstalledtotheoilreservoir,andwithinaweekofoperation,thebearingtemperatureandthevibrationstartedtoreduceThemachineoperationwassustaineduntilthenextshutdownAspartofthemitigation,aspecialcleaningadditivewasinjectedintotheoilsystempriortoshutdowntocleanthesystemDetailedoilsamplingtests(MPC,RULER)wereintroducedaspartofthelongtermimprovementstrategyAnewtypeofoilwasintroducedwithmuchbettervarnishingresistanceThiscasestudypresentstheproblemsencountered,analysisperformed,recommendations(longandshortterm)implementedandresultsachieved
