dc.description.abstract | This study presents an economic model of the cacao industry of the Dominican Republic which would be useful in evaluating the influence of investments and other policy decisions in an economic development program. A computer simulation model of the Dominican cacao industry was constructed, tested and refined so that it represented the working of the industry. The consequences of different development policies were simulated under varying conditions. The government of the Dominican Republic is engaged in an economic development program, seeking to expand export earnings while maintaining balance of payments equilibrium. The cacao industry is one part of the agricultural sector which offers opportunity for increasing farm incomes and enlarging exports. The techniques of systems analysis, using computer simulation models, allow the study of a complex, interrelated system and the effects of alternative programs. The simulation model of the Dominican cacao industry was developed to represent the present system which is undergoing modernization. ... | en |
