Humane Society, number 09

Abstract

According to the Spring-Summer issue of "News from AggieLand" in 1995; faculty and staff of the College's small animal hospital submitted the design for surgical facilites at the new Austin and Travis County Humane Society. It included a prep room, small pharmacy, scrub room, a recovery room and a surgical area with five tables. Through an agreement with this and other local Humane Societies, fourth-year students could gain experience with hands on neutering and spayings and also help the community.

Dr. Shadduck received his DVM from Ohio State University in 1963 and a Masters in 1965, followed by a PhD. In 1967. His specialty was Veterinary Pathology and his first position was at Ohio State as a teacher and researcher in 1968. In 1973 Southwestern Medical School in Dallas offered him a position as Associate Professor of Comparative Pathology where he stayed for 8 years. His next move was to the University of Illinois as a Department Head, and in 1987 he joined the faculty at the Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences College at Texas A&M. In 1988 he served as interm Dean; and was appointed Dean of the College in 1990. By 1997 he had left College Station and ended his professional career in Fort Collins, CO. where he worked for an animal health company and started his own consulting firm. In 2003 John and his wife Mary Lou retired to live in Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas. As of 2014 it was confirmed that John and Mary Lou were living at the Highland Spring retirement facility in Ohio.
