dc.description.abstract | Dr. Michael Szabuniewicz, (1909-2006) native of Poland earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Ph.D. from the Veterinary Medicine Academy in Lvov, Poland. He became a cavalry officer in the Polish army when Warld War II broke out and was taken prisoner by the German army spending five years in a Prisoner of War camp. After the war ended Dr. Szabuniewicz worked as a veterinarian for the Belgian government and was in charge of an agricultural ranching facility in the Belgian Congo. Due to political unrest, he and his family immigrated to the United States in 1961. He worked at Texas A&M University in the College of Veterinary Medicine for 13 years, where he was designated Professor Emeritus. During his tenure, he was a prolific researcher and strived to teach with a practical approach and yet impart a bit of his inquisitive nature to his students who affectionately called him "Dr. Mike". His collaboration with peers in research led him to have many articles published in various journals. He retired from Texas A&M at the age of 65. His love for teaching and research continued, though, as it led him to teach in Iran and Venezuela.
In all, his career has spanned 40 years, two wars and four continents. Dr. Szabuniewicz passed away on August 21, 2006 and is buried at the College Station Cemetery. | en |
