dc.description.abstractCoatings are used to combat wear on a number of centrifugal pump components, including wear rings, vanes, diffusers, impeller seal surfaces, and bearing areas on shafts or shaft sleeves. Their use provides a manifold increase in life in most instances with concomitant increase in productivity and reduction in maintenance costs. The predominant modes of wear addressed are solid particle erosion, abrasive wear, and adhesive wear. The most frequently used coatings include tungsten carbide based cermets, chromium oxide, and aluminum oxide, applied by detonation gun deposition, or plasma sprat and hard chromium applied by electrolytic deposition. Since the latter method is well known and usually limited to shaft repair, the major emphasis of this presentation will be on the cermet and oxide coatings. [1]. A brief description of the deposition technique and resulting coatings will be followed by a discussion of laboratory wear data and examples of applications on centrifugal pumps.en
