CMA/STLE Pump Seal Mass Emissions Study
Abstract
The Chemical Manufacturers Association and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers conducted a study of the leak rates from pumps equipped with mechanical seals. The resulting analysis indicates that attention to maintenance issues can bring pumps into compliance with expected HON standards without major retrofits or replacement of equipment. Seal materials of construction are discussed as a means for improving performance. Mass emission rates (Ib/hr) are far lower than previous EPA estimates.
