Three Paths to Energy Savings

Abstract

General Electric's program of energy management and conservation continues to provide significant savings in energy costs in a climate of increasing energy prices and reduced visibility and promotion nationally. In 1984, General Electric energy use declined but energy costs have increased sharply since 1973 to a total Corporate expense exceeding $400 million. Key activities in maintaining company energy management emphasis are increased distribution of Company energy progress reports, implementation of a computerized energy data base, establishment of Corporate and operations energy reduction targets, and continued plant energy surveys. To stay ahead of escalating energy costs, the continuing need for energy conservation remains one of the top priorities of General Electric management. This paper briefly describes the GE Energy Management Program and some of the energy conservation projects, both large and small, that have been successfully implemented within General Electric and how they might be applied to your business.
