dc.description.abstract | Within the past few years, pinch technology has revolutionised the way engineers design and retrofit processes. The technology offers a new approach to process integration based on the application of the pinch principle. Early applications were mostly in the petrochemical and bulk chemical industries. In this paper we report the use of pinch technology in a wider range of industries including food, pulp and paper, cement brewing and dairy product processes. These processes have featured; batch and continuous operations; solids, liquids and gas processing; use of specialised equipment and operations; and wide ranges of feedstock and product specifications within the same plant. In spite of these demands, pinch technology has produced outstanding results with energy consumption reduced in the range 15-70%, capital requirements reduced for new designs, flexibility improved and plant capacities increased. | en |
