Abstract
Benchmarking helps people understand where they stand and where they need to be to stay competitive. It provides guidance on how to get to where you want to go. Benchmarking has been conducted in the hydrocarbon processing industry for many decades by companies to compare similar internal operations. Industry wide benchmarking has grown in the past two decades and especially in the new globalization era. Benchmarking may be focused on many different objectives and subjects. Energy efficiency is one of the areas of highest interest. Key issues must carefully be considered to obtain meaningful metrics and the most useful results.
